GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Women’s Track team scored 75 points during the final day of competition to repeat as Outdoor Champions of the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University on May 7.
The title was the 11th women’s outdoor crown for FAMU since 1987, and it marked the third time in school history that they repeated as champions, joining the 1993 and 1994 squads, and the dominant stretch of teams from 1997 to 2000, which won four titles in a row.
Andrea Aaron, won the MEAC’s Outstanding Field Athlete award as she accumulated 29 points. She won the shot put, finished second in hammer, third in the javelin and fourth in the discus.
Lady Rattlers Coach Darlene Moore, Ed.D. was selected as the MEAC’s Outstanding Coach for the second year in a row.
“The girls have been performing well this year and we executed extremely well in the field and distance events over the first two days,” said Moore. “That helped us build up enough of a lead to hold off everyone in the final day. We pretty much had perfect performances at this meet.” She added.
A top two finish in the 5000 meter run for by FAMU helped lock up the championship as Cynthia Chelelgo won the race in 17:46.78 and Judith Kibii finished second in 17:50.96.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our young ladies. It is hard to win a championship, much less two in a row. We are definitely striking in the classroom, on the track and in the field,” Moore concluded.
