Greetings FAMUans,
Welcome to the first summer edition of FAMU Forward where we share the outstanding accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community.
With the summer months at hand, the start of the 2016-2017 academic year is fast approaching. In light of this, please rest assured knowing that the hard work and achievements of the University community will continue to have a platform through coverage in the FAMU Forward newsletter.
I do hope to see many of you at the National Alumni Association’s Annual Convention May 25-29 in beautiful Tampa, Fla. The convention always serves as an exciting time to share the latest news pertaining to FAMU and learn more about the great work taking place within the association.
As we continue our march toward becoming a globally recognized best in class, doctoral research University, it is important that we remain focused on the responsibilities we must all uphold toward ensuring the success of our students. With this in mind, please take note that every member of the University community, to include our students, faculty and staff, our devoted and accomplished alumni and our faithful retirees, play a vital role in preserving FAMU’s enriched legacy.
Congratulations are once again extended to the more than 1,200 graduates who earned degrees during our spring commencement ceremonies on April 30. To our returning students, it is my hope that you will make the most of your efforts during the summer months. Whether your plans entail an internship or taking a few summer classes, your commitment to making progress and achieving your academic goals must never waver. By keeping your eye on the prize, you will prepare yourselves to return to the “Hill” charged up, with a burning desire to do what is required to join the ranks of our proud and accomplished alumni.
In terms of staying focused on achieving goals, a special congratulations goes out to Coach Darlene Moore, Ed.D. and the members of our Women’s Track Team for capturing their 11th MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship. This great achievement speaks highly of the hard work and dedication contributed by Coach Moore and the young ladies who comprise the team.
The drive and commitment demonstrated by many of our student athletes across the board is indicative of the passion for excellence imposed upon them by Director of Athletics Milton Overton and the entire Athletic Department administration and staff.
But more importantly, a commitment to excellence is reflective of the history of FAMU and our obligation as caretakers of the legacy, to always put forth our best efforts in everything we do!
Keep Striking Rattlers!
