The Florida A&M University (FAMU) campus community is celebrating the holidays by giving back to the Big Bend area with a series of events.
The University is gearing up for its annual Holiday Toy Drive and Celebration on Dec. 2 from 5-7 p.m., at the President’s House, located at 1810 S. Adams St.
Interim President Larry Robinson, Ph.D., and his wife, Sharon, will host the event. The evening will feature live music from Soul Xone, refreshments, and door prizes.
Community members are asked to bring new, unwrapped gifts for children of all ages. The gifts will be donated to local organizations that focus on supporting children and families in need.
Last year’s Toy Drive generated enough toys to ensure approximately 400 area youth received gifts during the holidays with the help of 175 community supporters.
Donated gifts can be dropped off ahead of the event at the FAMU Office of Communications, located in Lee Hall, at 1601 S. Martin Luther King Blvd., Suite 200.
In November, the University kicked off its holiday outreach efforts at Gaither Gymnasium, where it hosted its annual Turkey Drive to prepare boxes of food for families in need in the Leon County area.
Nearly 400 turkeys were collected and distributed with the help of employee and student volunteers, as well as community partners. Participants included representatives from the Leon County Sherriff’s Office, Tallahassee Police Department, BB&T Bank, Wal-Mart, and Costco.
Later in December, the University will host its annual “Shop with a Cop” event, where FAMU police officers will take families and children in need shopping for the holidays at local Wal-Mart stores.
