Welcome to another informative issue of FAMU Forward, in which we share exciting news and accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
In this issue you can enjoy reading about the President’s Toy Drive and the gifts donated by students, faculty, staff, and University supporters to help make the holidays brighter for children throughout the Big Bend Region. You can also read about FAMU College of Law alumna Kelly McCormack Ingram, who was recently elected as a Brevard County, Florida judge.
Several key achievements have transpired in recent weeks. During the Florida Classic Weekend, a $5 million initiative was unveiled that will support scholarships for student retention and recruitment, in addition to providing funds to support our outstanding faculty. Our FAMU Foundation Board of Directors approved the initiative which was strongly endorsed by our Board of Trustees. This initiative will enrich the educational experience of students and incentivize faculty to continue and even expand their roles in teaching, research, and service. The Classic weekend also provided an opportunity for our Board of Trustees, Foundation Board of Directors, Rattler Boosters, National Alumni Association, student leadership, and University leadership to hold an unprecedented gathering as a sign of unity within the Rattler Nation!
Among our latest accomplishments is a collaboration with Lockheed Martin. The partnership will provide up to $5 million to FAMU toward NASA space explorations to carry humans to Mars. As a result of this novel collaborative effort, I have emphasized over the past few weeks that the road to Mars now goes through FAMU. Funds obtained through the initiative will engage faculty in research and development, support our University STEM programs and provide internships and potential employment opportunities for FAMU students.
As we conclude our fall semester, years of study and sacrifice will culminate during another commencement ceremony this evening. As we commend our graduating seniors and celebrate their accomplishments, I also want to congratulate the efforts of the many parents, family members, and key supporters who have dedicated themselves and provided the resources to help their students achieve this important milestone in life.
To our newest alumni, always remember to give thanks for the strength and courage it took for you to earn a college degree. To our returning students, please enjoy this well-deserved break with family and friends. But most importantly, use this time to prepare yourselves to return to the “Hill” with a burning desire to do what is required to join the ranks of our proud and accomplished alumni.
Thanks once again for the support and encouragement many of you have provided as we continue our work together toward the enhancement of FAMU.
Congratulations and Happy Holidays Rattlers!
