On Thursday, November 21, the Florida Department of Education (FDOE) notified Florida Agricultural and
Mechanical University’s (FAMU) College of Education it now ranks number one across the state for elementary education programs in the elementary/English as a Second Language (ESOL) endorsement and the reading endorsement among its peer groups.
FAMU’s College of Education was also ranked among the top five educator preparation programs in the state.
“Our elementary education program has the highest enrollment of all the education programs we offer,” said
Allyson L. Watson, Ph.D., dean of the College of Education. “The elementary education team, under the direction of Dr. Mary Newell, works tirelessly to truly support the growth of our future teachers and help them realize their potential.”
According to the performance report prepared by EducationCounsel and presented to the state, programs
receive a score for five metrics, including placement and retention rates and teacher evaluation. FAMU’s College of Education received the highest overall rating with a 3.6 summative score.
As also detailed in the report, Florida teacher preparation programs are approved for five-year periods. FDOE then analyzes the annual summative rating scores, along with data and findings collected during a site visit.
“These rankings underscore the impact of the work we do to prepare teachers and educational leaders,” Watson said.
