TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) President Elmira Mangum, Ph.D., has been named among the nation’s most influential African Americans on the EBONY “Power 100” list. President Mangum will be featured in the December issue of EBONY magazine under the list’s “First” category for making history as the University’s first permanent female president in its 127-year history.
“I am grateful to receive this prestigious recognition on behalf of the University. This honor represents FAMU’s long legacy of helping to foster transformative changes in low-wealth and underserved communities around the globe, ” Mangum said.
Two FAMU alums will join President Mangum on the “Power 100” list. Phillip Agnew will be honored as a “Community Crusader” for his work as the executive director of the Dream Defenders, Inc., and filmmaker and producer Will Packer will be honored as a “Cultural Influencer.”
Each year the magazine selects leaders from a variety of fields (including business, medicine, sports, media, religion, and the creative arts), who have made noteworthy accomplishments and are changing the course of history through their work, while making an enduring and lasting impact in their communities and the world.
“The EBONY team is very excited to recognize the accomplishments of the honorees on this
year’s Power 100 list,” said FAMU alumna Mitzi Miller, editor-in-chief of EBONY magazine. “From grassroots to the corporate boardrooms, all of the selected individuals have made a significant impact on both African-American and American cultures. They are truly an inspiration to keep striving.”
A gala celebration for the honorees will take place in Los Angeles on Nov. 19.
Comedian Kevin Hart, Bishop T.D. Jakes, television producer Shonda Rhimes, ballerina Misty Copeland, Xavier University President Norman Francis, NBA player Kevin Durant, and music producer Dr. Dre are also among the honorees.
