TALLAHASSEE — Florida A&M University has been recognized as one of the top colleges in Florida for students interested in military service by The College Database.
FAMU ranks among the very best schools for future service members in the state of Florida, with an affordable annual tuition rate and ROTC programs for Army and Navy. With the cost of college a concern for many families, it’s important for students to find an affordable post-secondary option with demonstrated academic excellence. However, it’s equally important that students interested in service have the opportunity to explore military programs while working toward a degree.
“We are honored to be recognized as one of the top colleges in Florida for future service members,” said Lt. Col. Joseph Kelly, Rattler Battalion commander. “We desire to awaken within each cadet high ideals and an unquenchable desire to achieve in leadership and our communities. We recruit the top scholar-athlete-leaders to become future officers in our United States Army, leading the most precious resources that our country has to offer, and that is America’s sons and daughters. We are very proud to be recognized as a part of that growth and change.”
Each college or university on the list offers at least two ROTC programs to active students, as well as in-state tuition below $20,000 per year.
FAMU is working on several initiatives to not only find and develop cadets to lead soldiers, but to be a campus-friendly place for America’s veterans to attain an education after serving.
In July, FAMU Interim President Larry Robinson signed a Memorandum of Understanding with VetPower LLC, and IIECS Military Veteran Training to Work Business Academy to create a partnership that will provide training and job opportunities to military veterans and other students, specifically in the area of agriculture. The agreement allows the university to recruit military veterans and increase support to veterans and their families.
“Everyone talks about service members using their GI Bill to go back to school, but rarely do people discuss current students using college to join the service,” said Wes Ricketts, vice president and general manager of The College Database. “Colleges with ROTC programs give students a great opportunity, not only to explore military service, but to gain valuable leadership skills coveted by employers.”
