FAMU SBDC Provides Workshops For Community Entrepreneurs

July 29th, 2014 Andrew Skerritt News

The Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will host four workshops for entrepreneurs in the coming weeks. The SBDC at FAMU works with existing and start-up small businesses to help them grow and compete in today’s global economy. These workshops are designed to assist entrepreneurs, new and seasoned, in the growth and development of their skills as business managers.

The four workshops include:

How to Generate Your Business Model
July 29 at 3 p.m. at the SBDC in Innovation Park
Business Model Generation is an innovative concept based on a handbook by the same name. It is a quicker approach to defining and articulating how your business will operate. LaTanya White is a business analyst at the SBDC with a focus on entrepreneurial education.

The Bean Team Presents: Accounting Made Easy for Small Businesses
July 31 at 3 p.m. at the Bean Team Headquarters, 2001 Thomasville Rd.
Join Charles Musgrove, CPA and leader of the Bean Team, a firm that provides accounting, tax, consulting and staffing solutions, to learn the basics about the best accounting practices for small businesses. This is the perfect opportunity for small business owners to get access to accounting and tax strategies that can help you ensure your company’s financial well-being.

How to Write a Business Plan
August 5 at 5:30 p.m. at the SBDC in Innovation Park
This intensive, hands-on workshop, instructs participants on the purpose, structure and content of a business plan. The course will be presented by C. Julian Douglas, the owner of C. Julian Douglas & Associates, LLC, a business management consultancy.

Financing Your New Business
August 12 at 5:30 p.m. at the SBDC in Innovation Park
This course is designed to explore the avenues that are available to entrepreneurs who need financing to start a new business. It will be led by Aundrá McGlockton, Sr., a certified business analyst with the SBDC.

SBDC has been helping entrepreneurs since 1991. In the past year, the SBDC has served 465 small businesses in Franklin, Liberty, Taylor, Madison, Leon, Gadsden, Jefferson and Wakulla Counties. Keith Bowers, the director of SBDC, believes that small business owners will learn invaluable skills to help grow their business.

“Business owners get to avail themselves of the resources to help them manage their business,” said Bowers. “If it’s accounting, marketing, financing, identifying sources for capital, we think this is invaluable to them. If there are areas where they are uncertain or need help, we would love to provide the information for them.”

Bowers says that long-time business owners can also benefit from the expertise provided by the workshops.

“Entrepreneurs are the least likely people to ask for help,” said Bowers. “Their business is their baby. It’s based on a lot of statistical information that we have available. We bring experts to talk about current, key areas of business.”

Those who can not attend the workshops, but would like to get the information can visit the FAMU SDBC YouTube page. It will have the courses provided for on-demand viewing.

Participants can register online at http://sbdcfamu.org/sbdc-workshops/ or call (850) 599-3407 for more information.
