University Provides Meals and Toys for Needy Families During Holiday Season
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In preparation for the holiday season, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) President Elmira Mangum, Ph.D., and members of the University’s senior leadership team kicked off the University’s Season of Giving on
Nov. 17 by providing 500 meals for homeless and needy individuals to the Tallahassee-Leon Shelter. The Season of Giving continues at FAMU on Nov. 25 at 9 a.m. with the University’s Annual Thanksgiving Drive at the Gaither Gymnasium, located at 1755 Wahnish Way, Tallahassee, FL 32307.
The drive brings together the University and many community organizations to prepare and deliver Thanksgiving baskets for families in need. Participants include: the FAMU Department of Psychology, the FAMU Center for Undergraduate Student Success, the FAMU Police Department, city and county departments, the Leon County Sherriff’s Office, the Tallahassee Police Department, the Tallahassee Urban League, and local churches.
The University will also hold its annual President’s Holiday Toy Drive on Dec. 5 at the Gaither Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. Participants are asked to bring unwrapped toys to be provided to area boys and girls in need. The University will also hold a free holiday concert presented by the FAMU Concert Chorale on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. in Lee Hall Auditorium, located at 1601 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32307.
“FAMU has a 127-year legacy of serving the underserved. We are involved year-round with providing a wide range of services throughout the state of Florida, including essential community-based healthcare and extension services. I am humbled at the opportunity to continue this legacy of faithfully serving those in need,” Mangum said.
