William Clemm has been selected as the new director of the H. Efferson Manning Student Union and Student Activities Office at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU).
Clemm currently serves as the assistant director of Event and Guest Services at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union at the University of Maryland College Park, where he oversees the coordination of customer and event services.
FAMU’s associate vice president for Student Affairs, Thomas Alexander, noted that Clemm was chosen based on his skill set and prior experience. The university was in search of someone who acquired “a comprehensive set of skills” and could properly perform the responsibilities needed for the position.
“He was chosen because of his comprehensive set of skills necessary to perform the duties outlines in the position. He received favorable comments from the students, faculty and staff that participated in his day-long interview,” Alexander said.
Clemm developed an interest in the field as an undergrad student at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Md., where he was heavily involved with student government and various student activities.
“I’ve been involved in student affairs for a while. I remember how much campus life was important to me, and I want students to share that same passion,” he said.
After graduating from Morgan State, Clemm briefly served as the University’s database manager. He then became an assistant director in the Department of Student Life at John Hopkins University prior to returning to Morgan State as assistant director of Operations.
“I’ve always wanted to work as a director of a student union at an HBCU, it’s always been a dream of mine, said Clemm. “I’m a product of an HBCU, I understand the importance of an HBCU. They helped me get through college and I wanted to do the same thing, give back,” he added.
Alexander believes Clemm will be a great asset to the University, and just as with previous directors, he and Clemm will work closely together during the transition process.
“I am looking forward to the experience he will bring related to student unions and facilities management. He has been very involved with the professional associations that relate to student unions and will bring that to FAMU,” he said.
As the new director, Clemm will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Student Union, which includes developing and implementing programs for the campus community.
“It is important to understand that Student Activities is an office within the Student Union. My goal for the Student Union is for it to be a central destination where students go for programs, services, or simply to relax. Student Activities will assist with that through the programs it produces along with the student organizations that it oversees and/or manage. The Student Union is in the process of renovations.
Clemm will begin his tenure as the new director this summer. He hopes to significantly improve the campus life for current and future FAMU students.
“I would like to ultimately mentor the next generation of student affairs professionals that come through the doors at Florida A&M. I want the student union to reach its full potential and to help student organizations across campus.”
