The Holiday Season shifted into full gear during Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University’s President’s Toy Drive on Dec. 2.
The annual event, which took place at the President’s House on Adams Street, brought in more than 400 toys, nearly 80 books, and more than 40 bikes for distribution to area children during the holidays.
Interim President Larry Robinson, Ph.D. said the toy drive is a fitting example of the special passion FAMU has for the local community.
“Our gathering provides an opportunity for us as members of the FAMU community to take actions that will help others have a happier holiday season,” Robinson said. “The toys that were donated will truly bring joy to the boys and girls who will receive them.”
Vernon Bryant, chairman of the event planning committee, said he was pleased with the outpouring of support for the event.
“We had a great crowd to include members of the University basketball and softball teams. It shows the generosity the University has for our surrounding community,” Bryant said.
In addition to refreshments, attendees were treated to the soothing sounds of “Soul Xone” throughout the evening. Items received at this year’s event will be presented to three organizations in the local area to include the Tallahassee Housing Authority, the Children’s Home Society of Florida, and Living Stones International, which supports children of Incarcerated Parents.
Bryant said the organizations designated to receive the donated gifts were selected because of their record of assisting area youth.
“This gives us an opportunity to give back during this time of year to those organizations who are trying to make the holidays a little bit brighter for kids in need,” Bryant said.
