TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) voted to fully reaccredit the Florida A&M University (FAMU) journalism program.
“I want to commend our team in the School of Journalism and Graphic Communication and those in the Office of the Provost for their efforts that led to the reaffirmation of accreditation by ACEJMC,” said President Larry Robinson, Ph.D. “This decision demonstrates again the quality of FAMU’s academic programs and exceptional learning experiences available to our students.”
The ACEJMC Site Team revisited the School of Journalism & Graphic Communication (SJGC) Division of Journalism in January and found the program in compliance regarding two accrediting agency Standards that were under review: Standard 5 – Scholarship: Research, Creative and Professional Activity and Standard 9 – Assessment of Learning Outcomes. The Division’s accreditation had been on provisional status.
“This is an exciting time for the Division of Journalism,” said Acting Dean Bettye A. Grable, Ph.D. She said ACEJMC recognized the high-quality of the journalism and public relations program and that it is worthy of the Council’s unanimous vote for accreditation. “We urge students who want to become media and public relations professionals to enroll and become highly-trained in these fields right here at FAMU.”
According to the Revisit Site Team Report, FAMU’s Division of Journalism faculty increased its faculty research and student assessment activities, while adhering to ACEJMC core values.
In 1982, FAMU’s Journalism Program was recognized as the first historically Black college and university (HBCU) program to earn accreditation.
“Our journalism program has built a legacy of producing top graduates who are making their mark in politics, law, media, diplomacy and other fields of endeavor,” said Maurice Edington, Ph.D., provost and vice president of academic affairs. “The reaffirmation of accreditation is confirmation of the good work being done by our faculty staff and students every day at FAMU.”
