Social distancing guidelines and other safety precautions will be in place for moving in days.
Florida A&M University (FAMU) students begin moving into residence halls on Friday, August 14 in anticipation of the start of fall semester classes.
The first group of students are scheduled to begin moving into Polkinghorne Village East at 7 a.m. in two-hour blocks. To minimize the spread of COVID-19, students have been assigned to single rooms.
Only two people are allowed to assist a student during moving in to adhere to social distancing guidelines. President Larry Robinson, Ph.D., members of the Senior Leadership Team, and University staff are expected to be on hand to welcome parents and students.
“We are excited about the return of our students. Our team has been working throughout the summer to create an environment to safeguard their health and safety as well as our faculty and staff while creating an environment conducive to learning,” Robinson said. “Because of the global pandemic, things are going to look very different this year; however, we are certain that our students will continue to excel in this new environment on the ‘Hill’.”
About 2,000 students are expected to live in residence halls. Moving in for the brand new FAMU Towers begins on Thursday, August 20. Three hundred and fifty or half of the facility’s 700 beds will be occupied. Moving in ends on August 22.
In preparation for students, residence halls have been cleaned and sanitized and outfitted with hand sanitizer stations in every building, sneeze guards at desks, health and safety signs and vending machines with personal protective equipment.
“This is the most important moving in day we have had in decades,” said Vice President for Student Affairs William E. Hudson, Jr., Ph.D. “We have done all we can do to ensure students are moving into a safe environment. Their health and safety are our top priority. We ask that they do their part to ‘Protect the FAMULY’.”
FAMU is offering a mixture of online, remote and in-person instruction this semester. The University recommends students adhere to CDC guidelines at all times and get tested before they arrive on campus. Students are able to take advantage of free testing at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
Meals for on-campus students will be provided in the Student Cafeteria with social distancing guidelines. Fall semester classes begin on August 24.
