Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society Inducts Largest Class of FAMU Students

February 8th, 2022 Andrew Skerritt News
Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society Inducts Largest Class of FAMU Students

The Florida A&M University chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society welcomed 74 honor students into membership at its January 26 induction ceremony. The spring 2022 class of The Kappa Iota (FAMU) Chapter consists of 29 graduate students, 32 seniors, and 13 juniors.

“This is the largest class of inductees at FAMU, and definitely the largest group of graduate members,” said Veronica Yon, Ph.D., chapter adviser and national president.

Alpha Kappa Mu was initially established to recognize junior and senior scholars in all academic disciplines; however, as more advanced degree programs increased over the years, it extended its membership opportunities to graduate students as well.

For Master of Public Health Student Chrishonna Bledsoe, Alpha Kappa Mu “is a great opportunity to join like-minded students and network with people from various backgrounds and degrees.”

Lynde Bowe, a graduate environmental science major, was drawn to “the organization’s focus on equity and inclusion.”

“As an international student, and being a female of color in a STEM field, inclusion and representation are important to me,” Bowe said.

MBA student Shaundala Bryant welcomes the chance “to mentor underclassmen and other Honor Society members as they matriculate through the University and into the proverbial ‘real world.’”

In addition to meeting GPA requirements and writing a mini-essay, each inductee secured a letter of recommendation from at least one professor in their respective disciplines. While community service requirements were waived due to COVID restrictions, several inductees still provided evidence of their volunteerism.

“We applaud this diverse group of scholars and thank their professors, families, and friends for supporting them,” said Yon.

Officers, President Timia Williams, senior, biology pre-medicine student; Vice President Loietta Holmes, a graduate education leadership student; Public Relations Liaison Delia Washington, a senior, business administration student; and Secretary-Treasurer Tamia Isaacs, a senior, biology pre-medicine student, assisted with the ceremony.
